Day 27 - English Camp

(From left to right) Student from Sudan, Bangladesh, Turkey and 3 of us from Philippines

Cordially invited

MAN 2 Banyumas invited foreign students from UMP to talk about how learning English is important and what are the techniques in learning the language. Of course we wouldn’t want to miss such occasion. We responded positively on the invite and excited to share our thoughts about the subject matter that we are about to share. We are always on the go and elated whenever we have an opportunity to teach and share to students.

In the evening, we were picked by some of the students UMP MESS where we are staying and then we head straight to the school. Upon entering the school compound, we thought that there were no students yet because the environment is so silent. Later that we know as approach a classroom along a hallway on the second floor that there is a good crowd waiting for our arrival. We were greeted by their warm smiles of eagerness to meet us and enjoy the night with us.

English Forum

We were seated on a long table with some familiar local delicacies in front of us. We were asked to munch some to fill our tummy. We started the “forum-like” discussion by introducing ourselves, where we come from and what was the reason why we flew to Indonesia. After all of us done introducing ourselves, we were asked several questions like what is the difference of our education system to their country, how did we learn English and what are the tips that we can share to be able to fluently use English language in Communication. I answered the question one by one and every time I finish my speech, students respond in a round of applause.

I told the students that globalization is an inevitable phenomenon that one cannot easily avoid. As the years pass by, we are being connected through technological advancements hence making our world smaller. If we want to competitive and at par with other nation, we have to learn how to communicate to the world and that is through the common tongue which is the use of English language. I also encourage them to expose themselves in English materials such as books and movies and practice it. I told them not to be afraid in practicing and using language thinking that they will be discriminated.
